Seeing Green This Season

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

In my four decades living in Upstate New York, I cannot recall a time when we've had such an extended, green winter season. This must be some kind of record or something. All in all, we've had a whopping 1/2-inch of snow, and it melted the next day! When the local weathermen excitedly roll out their "historical records" and chatter endlessly about "computer models" and snow forecasts that always seem to fade away, you know it's a remarkable year.

Personally, I like snow (I don't have to shovel it!) but I am pretty happy without snow this year. I am enjoying the summer-like ease of simply hopping into the car without scraping ice, and simply driving off onto clear, non-slippery roads.

Others are a little less enthusiastic. Upstate New York tourism relies heavily on snow, as the state is filled with winter activities (when there is snow). Some of the wealthier ski resorts in the Adirondacks are making "fake" snow for their skiers. Word is, it's just not the same.

Maybe some of skiing aficinados would be interested to know that snow and skiing abounds in the Upper Valais mountains of Switzerland. The scenery is STUNNING and nothing beats the hospitality and comforts of the Oberwallis ski chalets. We have often dreamed of traveling to Switzerland someday. Just the thought of cozying up before a fireplace in a lodge, the fire crackling and the large, dewy snowflakes trickling from the skies outdoors makes me want to book my flight right now.

Featured on Lonely Planet and WikiTravel, the Oberwallis ski resorts are are some of the most popular winter destinations. They feature the "self-catered" ski chalet as well as the opportunity to race up and down the glorious Valais mountains.

There is more to do than ski, as well. Take the rails (train is a wonderful way to travel) to the numerous villages that pepper the foothills, filled with shops and true Swiss culture. The food, I hear, is amazing. If you are an adventurous type, try snowboarding. There's just a lot to do and it's all incredibly affordable. No fake snow here!

For more information, check out the Upper Valais guide. What a Christmas gift this trip would be!

I'm definitely enjoying the "green winter" here in Central Indiana. We did have one five-inch snowfall, but like your half-inch, it was gone the next day!
I am not a winter person, which accounts for our three-month visits to the Southland. Coming up very soon!
